Road to Cortina 2021 is the title of the documentary that RaiDue will broadcast on Sunday 7 February, at 12.00, on the opening day of the Alpine World Ski Championships in Cortina (7-21 February).

Viewers are taken on a journey through landscapes and words, images from today and from yesterday, interviews and reflections that step by step unearths the deep significance of this important international event, organised in Italy during a pandemic. Fifty-four minutes of emotions and stories, revealing a nation that chose to rise to the challenge and to collaborate to achieve success.

Strongly desired by Minister Vincenzo Spadafora, with the support of the Department for Sport, Road to Cortina 2021 is made by Panamafilm, with Fondazione Cortina 2021, Rai Documentari and the collaboration of Rai Sport.

The documentary recounts the various phases of a long and difficult journey, starting when the World Championships were awarded to the Queen of the Dolomites, to arrive at 7 February. These two moments are separated by several years of hard work and difficult choices. A giant machinery was put in motion to manage the planning and construction of the works, the design of cutting edge technical solutions, the protection of the mountain and the environment, the involvement of the local community, institutions and sponsors – with the added challenge of the global Covid pandemic.

Written and produced by Riccardo Brun, Paolo Rossetti, Francesco Siciliano for Panamafilm, and directed by Cosimo Alemà, Road to Cortina 2021 is also a journey through time. Siciliano recounts: «There is the Cortina of the 1956 Olympics in black and white, of international tourism of past decades, of politics and famous faces, of mountain enthusiasts. And of course the stories and interviews of the champions of yesterday and of today, from Christian Ghedina to Marta Bassino, Federica Brignone and Dominique Paris».

The programme features interviews with Valerio Toniolo, Government Commissioner of the Cortina 2021 project, Alessandro Benetton, President of Fondazione Cortina 2021, Gianpietro Ghedina, Mayor of Cortina, Giovanni Malagò, President of Coni.

Government Commissioner Valerio Toniolo comments: «The documentary, strongly desired by the government, gives visibility to the work done and the team spirit that has been fundamental to this journey, and above all it highlights the spirit and the values of the mountain, and the desire and strength to keep going at such a complex and delicate moment.».

Alessandro Benetton, President of Fondazione Cortina 2021: «The World Championships leave an important legacy in Cortina and in Italy, in terms of infrastructure and culture of the territory and major events. This documentary represents an important promotional tool for Cortina and the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, with a legacy of lasting images and testimonies».
