On the 18th International Mountain Day, dedicated to biodiversity, we want to tell you a story of hope and rebirth through a project close to home in which we believe strongly.
It was the night of 29 October, 2018, when a terrible tempest struck our valleys, destroying the forests and changing the face of the landscape. The violent force of nature manifested itself through the fearsome noise of the wind blowing at over 100km per hour. Nobody, however, imagined such a deep wound. The sheer extent of the damage inflicted became evident only at the light of day.
Vaia uprooted 14 million trees, destroying 42,000 hectares of forest, causing nearly 3 billion euros worth of damage, mostly in the Veneto region and a major part in the Asiago area. Entire forests were razed to the ground in a single night. Trees that were hundreds of years old were blown away and broken like matches.
Two years later, October 2020, sees the start of the experimental reforestation project “Oltre Vaia” (Beyond Vaia), promoted by the Municipality of Asiago together with the TESAF department of the University of Padova, Treedom and FSC Italy. The initiative aims at helping forest regrowth while at the same making the territory more resilient against extreme events, by taking a scientific approach.
The study was developed by the TESAF department at the University of Padova. An area of 3 hectares on the top of Mount Mosciagh, hit by the Vaia cyclone in 2018, and today FCS certified, will partly be left to natural evolution and partly replanted with approximately 6,000 seedlings including silver fir, larch, rowan, birch, beech maple and other native species, becoming a real open-air laboratory. The project is funded by the Treedom company, thanks to the commitment of believers in the project investing time and resources to raise the necessary funds.

Treedom is the only online platform in the world where you can have someone plant a tree for you and then follow it online.
Since its foundation in 2010 in Florence, more than 1.000.000 trees have been planted in Africa, South America and Italy. All trees are planted directly by local farmers and bring environmental, social and financial benefits to their communities. Thanks to its business model, in 2014 Treedom became part of the Certified B Corporations, a network of companies that stand out for high environmental and social performance.
Every tree on Treedom is geo-localized and photographed and has its online page, it can be kept or virtually gifted to others. Thanks to these features, Treedom’s tree engages people and at the same time it represents a great communication and marketing tool for companies.
