Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 2 October 2020Cortina 2021 is one of the sponsors of the Giro-E, the leading national and international cycle tourism event where cyclists on e-road bikes compete on the same route as the Giro d’Italia. The tour – organised by RCS Sport S.p.A. from 4 to 25 October 2020 – has twenty stages, with competitors notching up between 70 and 115 km every day: they are scheduled to get to the stage finishes at least two and a half hours before the arrival of the Giro d’Italia, crossing the same line as the iconic ‘Corsa Rosa’.

This event brings together two of the traditionally best-loved sports in Italy – cycling and skiing – just a couple of months before the beginning of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, scheduled to take place against the spectacular backdrop of the Queen of the Dolomites from 7 to 21 February next year.

The Light Blue Jersey is dedicated to Cortina 2021 and will be awarded to the leader of the Special Stage rankings. It has been personalised with the logo of the World Ski Championships and a red squirrel, the symbol of Cortina d’Ampezzo. The jersey will be awarded on the official podium at the end of each day and will also be on display at VIP Hospitality, which is located in the finish area of each stage.

Two familiar faces in the run-up to the World Championships in the Queen of the Dolomites will be following the race and awarding the jersey in some of the stages: multi-medallist Kristian Ghedina, Cortina 2021 Ambassador, and Corty, the World Championships mascot. “Ghedo” and the cute red squirrel will be at the finish areas of the stages in Valdobbiadene (17 October), Piancavallo (18 October), San Daniele del Friuli (20 October), Madonna di Campiglio (21 October), Laghi di Cancano (22 October) and the final stage in Milan (25 October). During the Giro-E, tickets for the Championships in February in Cortina will also go on sale online to the public.

With fewer than 130 days left to the opening ceremony of the World Championships, Cortina 2021 is teaming up with an event that has made the beautiful Italian landscape famous and much-loved throughout the world, but that also focuses attention on sustainability, electric transport and respect for the environment.  It is a partnership that underlines the values of sport and is demonstration of the desire to start again, in total safety, after the most critical phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lorenzo Tardini, Sales & Marketing Director of Fondazione Cortina2021, had this to say: «Cortina 2021’s presence at the Giro-E shows how different sporting events and traditions are willing to pool their energies and experiences to better promote their areas and Italy as a whole throughout the world. It is also testimony to our awareness of sustainable transport – e-mobility – and, ultimately, our commitment to secure a greener future for us all; we have been working with Audi and EnelX in Cortina for many years to build electric recharging facilities for the Championships and the whole area, and e-bikes are one of the most popular activities in the mountains in the summer. Sport must become a key driver of growth for companies if we are to rebuild our country after Covid, not just for the visibility it gives us globally and the business these events bring to our areas, but also for the healthy and positive message sport and its values convey. Cortina 2021 is at the starting gate: we are ready to kick off a memorable event, a great celebration of skiing, that will be held in total safety».
