With fewer than 140 days until the opening of the World Championships, three days of course inspections have taken place
500 million spectators are expected to watch the live coverage around the world
Giacobbi: «A unique opportunity for international visibility for the whole area»
Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 24 September 2020 – The 2021 Cortina Alpine World Ski Championships, scheduled to take place in the Queen of the Dolomites from 7 to 21 February next year, are shaping up to be a high-adrenaline event and will be broadcast live around the world to over 500 million spectators, without forgetting the digital community who will follow proceedings through new media.
In preparation for this, Infront Sports & Media, Host Broadcaster of the event, and Rai Radiotelevisione Italiana, Infront’s partner, which will broadcast exclusive live coverage of the whole event (unencrypted for Italy), have spent three days inspecting the championship slopes in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The purpose of the inspection – which focused on the Olympia delle Tofane, Vertigine, Druscié A and Labirinti courses and the respective finish areas – was to identify the best positions for the cameras to ensure breathtaking shots of every moment of the competition, and to evaluate the technical infrastructure for televisions and the necessary underground services. The Infront and Rai teams also visited the venue of the Opening Ceremony to discuss its live coverage, which is scheduled for 7 February 2021 at 6.00 pm.
This was an important step in the organisation of a first-class television production that will provide 360° coverage of the ski World Championships, the largest international winter sports event to take place during the Covid-19 emergency. The images, which will be broadcast throughout the world thanks to agreements with other global television networks, will be the perfect showcase to promote Cortina d’Ampezzo and the Dolomites as a tourist resort with timeless charm, the home of great sport and spectacular natural beauty. The coverage will also provide a unique opportunity to heighten visibility of Italy and promote the country as a whole after the complicated past couple of months.
During the two-week event, Infront and Rai will be joined by 650 representatives from the national and international media.
Valerio Giacobbi, CEO of Fondazione Cortina 2021 had this to say: «The World Championships are ready to go: with fewer than 140 days before the opening, we really can’t wait for the championship dream to begin. At this stage of the proceedings, we are focusing on the quality of the narration of the World Championships to ensure fans are able to follow every moment of the event, sharing this great celebration of sport and the mountains with us. The opportunity for global visibility offered by the World Championships will also be an invaluable driver of development for the Dolomite area and the country as a whole: just as the Winter Olympics back in ’56 were an outstanding showcase for Italy during its economic boom, these Alpine World Ski Championships will project the image of a country which has come together to start over after the crisis, organising high-profile international events».
