Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 10 February 2021 – A show within the show. A line that runs through 65 years of Italian and World History. This is the narrative offered by the photos from the 1956 Winter Olympics, positioned in the finish area of the current World Championships. Black and white shots that have immortalized some of the moments of the first winter Olympics held in Italy. A number of large black and white images can also be admired in the Tofana Lounge, in Rumerlo, where 300 lucky guests get to see the races every day.
A marriage between past and present, appreciated by Government Commissioner Valerio Toniolo and the Communication Director of Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, Giancarlo Di Gregorio. Toniolo says: “It was natural to link these two strategic moments for Italy, both symbols of rebirth and new beginnings. The first, from Italy under reconstruction, and the second, from Italy crushed by the pandemic. In both cases, sport is confirmed as a driving force for the resurrection of the economy and the image of Italy “.
Giancarlo Di Gregorio adds: “Istituto Luce Cinecittà has an unparalleled heritage of visual testimonials. It is a treasure trove of memories from the history of Italy and the world. We wanted to make our contribution, free of charge, to this event that honours Italy, which succeeded in organising it despite the many difficulties caused by the pandemic “.
The burden and the honour of organising the Alpine World Ski Championships lie with Fondazione Cortina 2021, operational centre of the event. Valerio Giacobbi, Managing Director, comments: “These black and white photos, so full of history and past emotions, are a precious enrichment of these World Championships and give a sense of continuity to the relationship between Cortina, sport and skiing”.
Continuity in motion, because in 2026 the Queen of the Dolomites will host the next Winter Olympics. Valerio Toniolo observes: “If we managed to give life to these World Championships, it is thanks to great teamwork, collaboration between public and private sectors, respect for responsibilities and skills. These World Championships also serve as an example that Italy wins when there is collaboration, when different parties, institutional and otherwise, talk and work together “.
