Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 18th February 2020 – With only few weeks to go until the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals 2020, a special protagonist is already set for the event—Corty, the Cortina 2021 mascot. This cute red squirrel soft toy is produced by Trudi—brand of the Giochi Preziosi Group, Fondazione Cortina 2021 licensee —and is now available in the online store of the World Ski Championships (https://winnerstore.it/it/merchandising/eventi/cortina-2021.html).
Wearing the colours and the logo of the World Ski Championships, Corty made his first appearance last November during the Skipass event at ModenaFiere together with the two Ambassadors of Cortina 2021, Kristian Ghedina and Sofia Goggia. He then set off on a promotion tour with stops in many venues of the White Circus (Bormio, Gardena/Gröden, Alta Badia, Campiglio, Kitzbühel and Zagreb) and final destination in Cortina at the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals.
Corty is inspired by the tradition and history of Cortina d’Ampezzo. The red squirrel is in fact one of the animals that live in the woods in the Dolomites. In 1939 it was chosen as the symbol of ‘Gli scoiattoli di Cortina’, the group of amateur mountaineers from the Ampezzo area (scoiattolo means squirrel). In 1954, together with one of them—Lino Lacedelli—it reached the summit of the second highest mountain in the world, K2. Over time, the red squirrel has become one of the iconic symbols of the Queen of the Dolomites. It is depicted in the logos of the town and of Fondazione Cortina 2021 and is the mascot of the local hockey team.
Corty is curious, sweet, loyal and charming, but also very athletic and ‘fast as a lightning’, like the ski champions that will soon make us feel strong emotions at the foot of Tofane. He is a real must have and will make the upcoming race days even happier and more exciting for everyone, young and old.
