Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 10 February 2021 – The Cortina 2021 Alpine World Ski Championships, currently taking place in the spectacular scenery of the Queen of the Dolomites, is a major international event with safety and security of athletes, teams, management, volunteers, media operators, and of course the local community, a top priority.
The women and the men of the Alpine Army Troops, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza and State Police are the “angels” watching over the event on a daily basis, with great professionalism and competence in managing large events, and with deep knowledge of the alpine environment.
The Alpini, present in Cortina d’Ampezzo with a contingent of about 150 units, from alpine regiments located in Northern Italy and Aquila, are coordinated by the Alpine Troops Command. They are entrusted with the task of organising and setting up the World Championship tracks, base logistics and rescue services on the tracks. By participating as protagonists at the World Championships, yet again the Italian Army demonstrates, through the Alpine troops, their operational capabilities, highlighting the synergies and capabilities of our country.
The security machinery also involves the Carabinieri, present at the World Championships with a Group of skiers and with the alpine rescue team of Cortina d’Ampezzo, accustomed to operating in challenging territories such as the mountain. With them, present in Cortina these days, professional departments from all over Italy. The Arma team aroused great emotions when they carried an enormous Italian flag down the tracks, officially kicking off the World Ski Championships. A constant presence, including on the tracks, that of the Carabinieri, with champions such as Dominik Paris among their numbers.
Great commitment also from Guardia di Finanza, with 100 soldiers (20 belonging to the Alpine Rescue Service – SAGF), deployed on the territory, in addition to a medic and an ambulance employed in the race areas. Vigilance from above and air support in the event of emergencies is assured by helicopters from Venice and Bolzano Air Sections, while ground patrols will survey accommodation facilities, public safety in the race areas and their vicinity. The military will also contribute to traffic services in the municipality of Cortina.
Finally, the State Police is on the front line for Cortina 2021 with canine units, bomb squads, U.o.p.i. (First intervention operational units), mountain safety and rescue services, selected shooters, and mobile units, which, coordinated by the Belluno Police Headquarters, ensure the activities of territorial control and surveillance of sensitive targets. Former Olympian and policewoman Wendy Siorpaes had the honour of carrying the Italian flag during the Opening Ceremony of the World Championships. Two Fiamme Oro Police Force athletes will be competing for medals on the Tofane, Nadia Delago and Martina Peterlini.
