Stories of light to illuminate Cortina
Every night, for the duration of the World Championships, from Sunday 7 to Sunday 21 February, the facades of the Hotel Royal and the Old Town Hall will be illuminated with images recounting the history, traditions and sport of the destination, through 3D architectural videomapping.
The project completes the Town Hall Art Light Design illuminations inaugurated at Christmas.
The birth of Cortina and the origins of the Dolomites, the Monti Pallidi, the ’56 Olympics with archive film footage, the emotions of the participating Nations and the evolution of winter sports.
Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL), 6 February 2021 – With the world’s eyes on Cortina, venue of the Alpine World Ski Championships, the Queen of the Dolomites greets the champions with stories of light and sound. Two new 3D videomapping installations illuminate the town centre, embracing the buildings facades, infusing energy and enthusiasm. The latest installations close a path of light, which started at Christmas with the Town Hall, lit every night and transformed into a work of architectural light design.
Fondazione Cortina 2021, the organising body of the World Championships, created the light show to chase away the shadows of a sports event born under the best auspices, but forced underway to adapt to current restrictions. A sign of hope in the form of an outdoor art show, respecting social distancing.
The project is by Q10 Media with the contribution of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – Department for Sport.
Stories of light to illuminate Cortina
From 7 to 21 February the projectors will illuminate the facades of the Hotel Royal and the Old Town Hall, showing videos that last approximately 6 minutes. For the entire duration of the Ski World Championships, four times a day, between 17.30 and 21.00, one can admire the display of light and colours. The two buildings are transformed into a screen, animated by two different intertwined narratives, like stages of a journey.
On the facade of Hotel Royal the storyboard is organised in narrative blocks, which dissolve into each other. One is dedicated to the great sport tradition of Cortina, with beautiful sequences from the 1956 Olympics. Another recounts the birth of Cortina, a microcosm where the environment is in balance with urban development. The mountain ranges frame the village, which gradually becomes a small town dominated by the bell tower. The “poetic” birth of the Monti Pallidi (Pale Mounts), the Dolomites, is told in a suggestive crescendo of music and colour.
The Old Town Hall, on the other hand, introduces the flags of the nations participating in the World Championships, with a creative dynamic effect. Exceptional archive images trace the history of winter sports: Downhill, Super-G, Giant slalom, Slalom, Alpine combined, Individual parallel, Team parallel alternate in an evocative flow of colours.
“This initiative – explains Valerio Giacobbi, CEO of Fondazione Cortina 2021 – allows us to make visible the enthusiasm surrounding the Championships, transforming it into light and colour. The centre of Cortina becomes the expression of the passion that ignites an event we have spent a long time waiting and preparing for. With this operation we continue the project we inaugurated during Christmas when we illuminated the Town Hall with a Championships themed Art Light Design. These installations have a strong expressive and symbolic value, and at the same time they can be enjoyed in safety, without causing crowds.”
“We have worked on the initiative with great pleasure, happy to contribute to a project that highlights, literally, the beauty, the energy, and the creativity of the territory and the community, ” adds Paola Coletti, councilwoman for the Municipality of Cortina. “This project completes the World Championship themed videomapping, created on the bell tower of the church, symbol of Cortina, in collaboration with Fondazione Cortina 2021, and inaugurated 3 December”.
In addition to Fondazione Cortina 2021, the lift company Consorzio Esercenti Impianti a Fune (CEIF) of Cortina d’Ampezzo, San Vito, Auronzo and Misurina is also featured, with its brand-new logo Cortina Skiworld (by the agency Nascent Design) launched for the occasion, starring the Dolomites and the squirrel symbol of the destination.
